It’s wild to think that Phasmophobia – the definitive ghost-hunting game that sparked countless clones – first dropped into Early Access back in 2020. Now, six years later, Kinetic Games has finally unveiled its 2026 roadmap, confirming that the game will officially hit Version 1.0 this year.

Major Game Updates

There’s several big updates happening for the game this year. The highly requested player character overhaul – which will feature brand new and more realistic character models, character customisation and cosmetics, and updated animations – will release in Q1 2026 (so right around the corner). A recent developer update showed us a few side-by-side renders of the new characters, and they are certainly a step-up from the janky models we’ve had for over half a decade. Though I’ll definitely miss the goofy charm that they brought to the game.

The game is also upgrading to Unity 6, as well as releasing on the Nintendo Switch 2. But the real headliner is the 1.0 release arriving alongside Horror 2.0, the long, long-awaited overhaul that aims to make the game scary again, with hopefully new ghost events, models, sound effects and more. For players such as myself who have been playing Phasmo for years, the game has lost some of what made it anxiety-inducing when you first started.

Sneakily hidden away in the roadmap is a “Lore rework” too, which is super exciting. There’s not really too much extensive lore in the Phasmophobia universe, but clearly there’s enough ideas going round seeing as a movie based on the game got greenlit a few years back.

Maps

Aside from these major game updates, we’ll be seeing some more map reworks this year. We’ve already seen the Asylum transformed into Sunny Meadows and the farmhouses get much-needed facelifts. The next two on the list are arguably two of Phasmophobia‘s most iconic maps – 6 Tanglewood Drive and 13 Willow Street.

Whilst many of us in the community have been worried about these two reworks, as their current designs and layouts are just so iconic, the devs have mentioned that they are trying to “retain everything we love about these maps but bring them in line with our overall vision” for the game. We’ve already got some early pictures of the new Tanglewood, and I must say, it does look pretty nice.

There will also be a brand new map this year. Last year we had Nell’s Diner, which was a really cool and unique design, so who knows where they’ll go next. I’m still holding out hope for a castle, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Events

And the final thing confirmed in the 2026 roadmap for Phasmophobia are the events. The usual Winter’s Jest, Crimson Eye, and Cursed Hollow events will be returning, alongside a brand new limited-time event, though we’re still in the dark regarding its theme or when it will drop.

That’s everything that’s mentioned in the roadmap, and first up will be the player customisation update and the Tanglewood rework, so keep your eyes peeled for those in the coming months. Stay tuned for more Phasmophobia news here at JumpScared!
