Solve the Murder Beginner’s Guide (The Outlast Trials)

Solve the Murder is the newest MK challenge in The Outlast Trials, and the first to be set on the Resort map. It features Liliya as the prime asset.

In this trial, players must investigate a murder, and figure out the killer, weapon and murder room (yes, it’s basically Clue, but arguably a little more stressful).

This guide walks you through how to complete the Solve the Murder MK Challenge in The Outlast Trials, with tips to find the 3 bits of evidence you need.

The Lobby

Once you exit the shuttles, progress towards the main entrance. Inside, you’ll see three TV screens with question marks, with signs above saying “Killer”, “Weapon” and “Room”. This is where you’ll input your final answers after you carry out your murder investigation.

You’ll also spot the murder victim, with a trail of blood leading away from him.

Before you head out of the lobby, there’s some hints to the right side of the room that will be useful to your investigation.

The first thing you’ll see is two weapon cabinets – one with a weapon, and one without. Remember which weapon is stored in that cabinet, as you’ll need this information later (spoiler, it’s not one of the murder weapons).

Next, take a look at the mannequin – it will spawn with different body parts present (e.g. the head, arms, legs, etc.). Memorise which body parts are present, as again, you’ll need this info later.

With the weapon and body parts in mind, you can now exit the lobby.

Finding the Murder Room

Just outside the lobby, pick up a blacklight and start following the blood trail. This will eventually lead you to the room where the murder took place, but getting there isn’t always straightforward.

You’ll be moving through outdoor areas, meaning that you need to turn on generators to power up the outdoor heaters, if you want to avoid freezing damage.

The path itself can also be awkward. You’ll sometimes hit blocked routes, whether that’s locked doors, co-op doors, or enemies forcing you to backtrack. When that happens, the best approach is to temporarily leave the trail, find another route around, and then pick it up again on the other side.

Also be aware that there are fake blood trails scattered around that can easily lead you in the wrong direction. They look convincing enough to throw you off, especially if you try to skip ahead. With nine possible murder rooms, it’s very easy to make a mistake if you rush, so it’s best to follow the trail closely from the start.

Once you follow the trail to the end, you will see a big pool of blood in the blacklight, indicating that’s where the murder took place. Inside this room, look for a TV with a number on it – that number is your answer for the murder room.

We followed the blood trail to room number 3. Here you can see the pool of blood.

Deducing the Killer

If you’ve played Despoil the Auction, you’ll recognise the main lobby of the resort (with the staircase on either side), and that’s where the 9 different suspects will always spawn. You’ll likely end up near (or directly pass through) this lobby whilst following the blood trail.

Each suspect is represented by a mannequin, and each one has a number next to it. The trick here is to compare them to the mannequin you saw at the start of the trial.

The killer is the mannequin that’s missing the body parts that your original one had. So if your starting mannequin had a head and a left arm, you’re looking for the suspect that doesn’t have a head and left arm.

In our case, he was killer number 1.

Figuring out the Weapon

The weapon room is located in one of the rooms around the main lobby of the resort where all the suspected killers can be found. The weapon room will be signified by a sign saying “Weapon Room”. Unfortunately, you’ll just have to explore the area until you find this room (as far as I’m aware, there’s no shortcut to immediately locate the room, as there’s a bunch of different places it can spawn).

Inside the weapon room, there will be four cabinets – each with a weapon inside – and a poster in front signalling the six different objects the murder weapon could be.

Since there are six choices, we just have to do a process of elimination. It can’t be any of the four weapons present in the room (as they are still in the weapons cabinets). It also can’t be the weapon that was locked away in the cabinet in the starting lobby.

So, the murder weapon is the object on the poster that’s not in either location.

There’ll be a number next to the weapon on the poster, and this will be your answer for the weapon.

Solving the Murder (and Exiting the Trial)

Once you have all three bits of information, return to the starting lobby and type in the numbers for each of three bits of evidence. Then press the red button.

If correct, you can then exit the trial via the same shuttles that you entered through. Before heading out, make sure you’ve completed your secondary objective, as it’s essential if you want to achieve an A+ grade.

If incorrect, you will take 2 bars of damage.

Best Amps and Rigs for Solve the Murder.

I’d stick with whatever rig you’re most comfortable using, as nothing in this challenge really stands out as overpowered. Personally, I tend to run the Stun Rig in most trials simply because of how reliable it is in tight situations.

That said, one amp that’s definitely worth considering is Evasive Maneuver. Liliya can be especially difficult to deal with when she’s disguised as a mannequin, and her grabs often come out of nowhere. Having a way to break free without taking damage can make a big difference if you’re trying to get an A+.
