Supermassive Games, the studio behind Until Dawn and The Quarry, has officially announced the release date for its next horror title, Directive 8020. The fifth entry in The Dark Pictures Anthology will launch on May 12, taking the cinematic horror series into deep space for the first time.

Previous instalments in the anthology have explored a wide range of historical themes, including the Salem witch trials, the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and the crimes of serial killer H. H. Holmes, all delivered with Supermassive’s signature interactive movie style. The main draw of the series has always been its branching narrative, where player choices can drastically change events and determine which characters survive. Each game is designed to be played solo or with friends, making them a popular pick for horror game nights.

A Sci-Fi Shift for the Series

Directive 8020 marks a major tonal shift by embracing science fiction and body horror. According to the Steam page, Earth is dying and humanity is running out of time. A distant planet, Tau Ceti f, located 12 light years away, represents a final sliver of hope. When the colony ship Cassiopeia crash-lands on the planet, the crew quickly realises they are far from alone.

The central threat is an alien organism capable of perfectly mimicking its prey, creating paranoia and distrust among the survivors. Players will need to question every interaction, as anyone could be human or something else entirely. The game leans heavily into tension, stealth, and psychological horror, with doppelgangers and grotesque transformations playing a key role in the narrative.

There’s usually one well-known celebrity attached to each game from Supermassive – for example, Will Poulter in Little Hope and Rami Malek in Until Dawn – and for Directive 8020, they’ve recruited Lashana Lynch (Bob Marley: One Love, The Woman King) to headline the cast.

Pre-Orders and Trailer

With the release date reveal, pre-orders for Directive 8020 have also gone live. Players who pre-order will receive a free Digital Deluxe Edition upgrade, which includes an outfit pack, additional Dark Pictures collectibles, cinematic filter packs, a digital artbook, and an exclusive soundtrack. A new trailer also dropped alongside the announcement, showing intense moments as the crew deals with the alien threat and their unsettling doubles.

A Long Time Coming

Directive 8020 has been in development for several years. First announced in 2022, it was originally planned for an October 2025 launch before being delayed into the first half of 2026. The gap also makes it the longest break between entries in The Dark Pictures Anthology, which previously followed an annual release cycle that concluded with 2022’s The Devil in Me.
