Release the Prisoners is an MK Challenge in The Outlast Trials that takes place in the Police Station. In this trial, reagents must locate a key (or keys) corresponding to their starting sector and use it to unlock the Security Room, allowing them to release the prisoners and exit the trial.

While the objective itself is fairly straightforward, the Police Station can be difficult to navigate due to its many locked doors and blocked paths. If you’re unsure where to go or what the key spawn looks like, this guide will walk you through how to complete the Release the Prisoners MK challenge in The Outlast Trials.

How to Complete Release the Prisoners

At the start of the trial, you’ll spawn in one of four sectors of the Police Station (Sector A, B, C, or D).

In co-op, each reagent will spawn in a different sector, and the sectors are separated by co-op doors, meaning players are initially confined to their own area.

Find the Sector Key

Your first objective is to locate the key for your sector.

The key appears on top of a water fountain labelled with the letter of the sector (e.g. Sector A), making it easier to identify once you find it. However, there are many possible spawn points throughout each sector, so you may need to search a bit before locating it.

Because the Police Station has a lot of padlocked doors and blocked hallways, navigating the sector can be confusing. Sometimes you’ll need to double back through rooms to reach areas closer to the objective.

Reach the Security Room

Once you’ve found your key, your next objective is to reach the Security Room.

The sectors are separated from the Security Room by electronic gates. To pass through, interact with the gate to open it. The gate will remain open for 10 seconds, and a timer above the door shows how long you have left before it closes again.

Be careful in this area, as Coyle patrols near the Security Room, and the electronic gates close behind you, leaving little room to escape if he spots you.

Insert the Keys

When you reach the Security Room, insert your key into the corresponding slot.

The number of keys required equals the number of players in the trial, so each player will need to contribute a key to unlock the Security Room.

Once all required keys have been inserted, the Security Room will unlock, allowing you to enter.

Release the Prisoners and Escape

Inside the Security Room, press the button to release the prisoners and begin the exit sequence.

Leave the Security Room and head toward the newly unlocked Jail gate on the left wall, leading to the holding cells. Continue down that hallway and exit the Police Station.

From there, make your way to the shuttles to complete the trial. It’s the same shuttle locations as the Kill the Snitch trial.

Best Rig for Release the Prisoners

For beginners, I’d recommend using the X-Ray Rig, as it allows you to see the location of the key. The first time I played this MK challenge, I had a lot of trouble finding the key and wished I had brought X-Ray to help speed up the search.

Once you become more familiar with the layout of the Police Station, you can switch to whichever rig you prefer. I often bring the Stun Rig on higher difficulties, as enemies can get pretty annoying and it’s easy to get trapped in a room with them due to the number of locked doors and blocked paths.

Best Amps for Release the Prisoners

Because of the high number of padlocked doors throughout the Police Station, some amps can make this trial much easier.

I’d recommend Lockbreaker, which lets you break open locks with bricks. This can save a lot of time when navigating your sector.

Another useful amp is Smash, which lets you break through co-op doors. This allows you to move between sectors and help teammates if they’re struggling to find their key. Smash can also be useful when searching for the secondary objective, which can spawn anywhere in the trial, not just within your starting sector. Collecting these secondary objectives is essential if you want to get an A+ grade in this trial.
