The indie cleaning simulator that somehow made scrubbing up crime scenes therapeutic just got a whole lot messier. Crime Scene Cleaner’s Nightmare Update is now live, adding two new challenge modes that push your cleaning skills and your knowledge of the maps to the limit.
Nightmare Mode
Nightmare Mode completely reimagines levels you have already completed, leaning hard into horror with twisted new stories and layouts. These are not just the same missions with a few extra bodies tossed in. They are full-on overhauls with fresh narratives and gruesome surprises.
I tested the first Nightmare mission, and the shift is immediate. What was once a manageable cleanup turned into chaos, with 13 bodies to deal with right out of the gate.

True Cleaner Mode
Beyond Nightmare Mode, the update also introduces True Cleaner Mode for players who want the ultimate test of their cleaning skills. This mode strips away the cleaner vision and the checklist for each area, meaning that you’ll have to use your knowledge of the levels and a keen eye to make sure you clean up everything.
How to Access the Challenge Modes?
To access these challenge modes, you’ll need to complete all base missions first and enter Kovalsky’s car in the mission hub. Then, press on one of the old missions and you’ll see the options for both the Nightmare and True Cleaner modes.

Other Features
Players can unlock custom tool skins and collectible music boxes by beating these challenging scenarios.
The update also includes new achievements for completionists who need that extra motivation.
And finally, there’s also a new “6th Sense” skill added to your cleaning arsenal, that highlights items that need to be put back in their right place. I wish I had that when I completed the museum level for the first time…
Final Thoughts
The Nightmare Update feels like exactly what Crime Scene Cleaner needed. Rather than creating entirely new content from scratch, the developers took what already worked and twisted it into something more challenging and disturbing.
For players who’ve mastered the base game’s levels, this update breathes new life into familiar spaces. And honestly, I’ve been having an absolute blast playing the new nightmare mode levels. It’s made one of my favourite simulator games even better.
The update is available now on Steam and consoles. If you’ve been waiting for a reason to return to your crime scene cleaning career, this update might be exactly what you’re looking for.
