Eliminate the Past is an MK Challenge in The Outlast Trials, released in 2024 on the Police Station map.

In this MK Challenge, you need to find and destroy as many record boxes as possible, within a set period of time,  by throwing them into the grinder in the Gymnasium.

There are 10 record boxes in total. One is already waiting beside the grinder when you arrive, while the other nine are hidden around the Police Station.

You don’t actually need to destroy every box to complete the trial. However, the more boxes you destroy, the easier your escape will be.

This guide walks you through how to complete Eliminate the Past, including where to look for the record boxes and how the number of boxes you destroy affects the escape.

Getting Started

When the trial begins, make your way from the shuttle to the Gymnasium.

There will be a record box next to the grinder. Pick it up and throw it inside.

Doing this starts the countdown for the main objective. The amount of time you get depends on how many Reagents are playing:

  • 1 reagent: 7 minutes
  • 2 reagents: 6 minutes
  • 3 reagents: 5 minutes
  • 4 reagents: 4 minutes

Once the timer starts, your goal is to find as many of the remaining nine record boxes as possible and bring them back to the Gymnasium.

Tip: The trial uses the same general layout as Cancel the Autopsy, although there are some differences to the routes and accessible areas.

Locating Record Boxes

Unfortunately, it is not the case that there’s an equal number of boxes in each Sector. Sometimes, one sector will have a lot of boxes, whilst another sector is fairly scarce.

There’s loads of different places that boxes can spawn, so it’s worth just carefully checking each room as you traverse the map checking for boxes.

Tip: Boxes won’t spawn on the floor. They will just spawn on surfaces such as tables, desks, furniture, etc.

Once you have a record box, bring it back to the grinder in the gymnasium.

Tip: Since record boxes classify as heavy boxes, it will reduce your movement speed, so you might want to use adrenaline to move faster whilst carrying a box.

Exiting the Trial

Once the timer runs out, or all 10 record boxes have been destroyed, the grinder will deactivate.

Return to the Gymnasium and press the button to begin the escape sequence.

The shuttle arrives shortly after the button is pressed, and you’ll then have 180 seconds (3 minutes) to reach it and escape the trial.

The shuttle is located at the back of Sector C, in the same area used for the escape in Sabotage the Lockdown. You’ll need to make your way through the opening in the wall and climb up to reach the street and the shuttle.

This exit gate is where you need to reach to get to the shuttles.

The route you need to take depends on how many record boxes you destroyed.

If you destroy all 10 boxes

If you destroy every record box, the Sector C exit route will open.

This is the easiest route because you can head directly through Sector C towards the exit shuttle, rather than having to travel through the other Sectors first.

Destroying all 10 boxes also means that no additional enemies will spawn during the escape, including Coyle.

There can still be enemies that were already present on the map, particularly on higher difficulties, but your escape will be far easier than if you don’t destroy all the boxes.

If you don’t destroy all the boxes

If the timer expires before you’ve destroyed every box, the Sector A route will open instead.

This is a much longer route. You’ll need to travel from Sector A through the Police Station, eventually making your way through Sector B and Sector C before reaching the exit.

Tip: The easiest way through the police station is via the back corridor, as you can quickly traverse from Sector A to Sector C.

The number of boxes you destroyed affects how many additional enemies appear during this escape sequence. The more boxes that you destroy, the fewer enemies will spawn in the three sectors whilst you are trying to escape. Similarly, the fewer boxes that you destroy, the more enemies that will spawn.

Unless you destroyed all 10 boxes, Coyle will always spawn by the shuttle, so be careful once you reach the street.

Best Rig for Eliminate the Past

Which rig you choose is personal preference, however I find the X-ray rig to be particularly useful, considering that locating the boxes can be quite challenging, especially as you’re against the clock.
