The Rebirth system in The Outlast Trials has changed quite a bit since the game launched into Early Access in May 2023. This guide will explain how to earn Rebirth Tokens, how many you need to Rebirth, what rewards you get from Rebirthing, and more.
What Is Rebirth in The Outlast Trials?
Rebirth is a way of progressing your character in The Outlast Trials. Once you have enough tokens, you can trade them in for your “freedom” at the guard in the Sleep Room. You will then need to complete a difficult trial, either solo or in a group, before your character earns their ‘freedom,’ stepping outside the facility as a newly programmed sleeper agent. After that, you will watch one of the game’s endings and choose a new character.
Does Rebirthing Lose My Progress?
Rebirths do not delete any of your current progress. You keep:
- Rigs
- Prescriptions
- Amps
- Cosmetics
- Currencies
Rebirth vs. Relapse
Relapse was introduced in Season 3 as a new prestige-style progression layer that works independently of the Rebirth system. This means you can Relapse even if you have never completed a Rebirth. The two systems operate separately and serve different purposes.
Rebirth
- Does not reset any permanent progression, including rigs, prescriptions, amps, cosmetics, and currencies
- Rewards include XP, Stamps, exclusive outfits, trophies, and avatar border upgrades
- After completing the Rebirth Trial, your character escapes and you create a new one
- Your account therapy level continues rising across all characters, unaffected by Rebirths
Relapse
- Unlocks once your account therapy level reaches 99
- Lets you increase your Relapse Level in exchange for resetting your therapy level back to 1
- Resets rigs, prescriptions, and amps, as well as permanent upgrades and unlocks
- Does not reset your escalation run progress, items bought with currencies (including paid currencies), grade ratings, or player stats
- Rewards include a prestige outfit and a Relapse plaque that appears outside your room
- Designed as a prestige system
How to Earn Rebirth Tokens
You can earn Rebirth Tokens by completing Trials or MK Challenges:
- 5 Rebirth Tokens per completed Trial
- 3 Rebirth Tokens per completed MK Challenge
You can store up to 1,000 Rebirth Tokens at a time before you will need to spend them.
How Many Tokens Do You Need to Rebirth?
You need 100 Rebirth Tokens to Rebirth.
If you are in a group and taking on the Communal Rebirth Trial, every member of the party must have 100 tokens.
The Rebirth Trial
The trial itself has changed quite a bit over time. You can now complete it solo or in a group.
Solo Rebirth Trial
- Takes place in the mansion from the tutorial
- Variators are added for each Rebirth, up to 5 total, to increase difficulty
Communal Rebirth Trial
- You must complete a random MK Challenge, whilst also tuning three Frequency Boxes and delivering Rebirth Records to the shuttles
- The Mirror World variator is active, which flips the entire map, making navigating around really difficult
Rebirth Rewards
Every time you Rebirth, you will receive:
- 10,000 XP
- 100 Murkoff Stamps
Additional rewards include:
- Randomized rebirth outfit for your first five Rebirths
- Trophies, which can be displayed in your room, for Rebirths 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100
- Avatar border upgrades for your first four Rebirths
Has Rebirth Changed?
The rebirth system has gone through several major updates, since the game’s launch.
Early Access / Early Full Release
- Required 20 tokens
- Trials awarded fewer tokens
- Rebirth Trial could only be completed solo
Season 3 (April 2025)
- Murkoff paused all Rebirths after Amelia helped multiple Reagents escape, and introduced the Relapse system.
Season 4
In Season 4, the Rebirth Trial reopened, introducing the Communal Rebirth Trial alongside solo options. The number of tokens earned per Trial was increased to 5, and the number of tokens required to Rebirth was raised to 100.
