After a long wait for Phasmophobia fans, the first major additions to the ghost roster since June 2022 are here. Kinetic Games has added three brand-new ghost types alongside the return of the annual Christmas event.

The new entities are the Dayan, the Gallu, and the Obambo. While players are still uncovering their hidden abilities, here is what we know so far based on the in-game Journal and folklore.

1. The Dayan

Rooted in Indian and Pakistani folklore, the Dayan is typically the vengeful spirit of a woman who suffered a traumatic death. In Phasmophobia, she is a ghost that punishes lots of movement in her vicinity.

  • Journal Entry: “The Dayan is born from the soul of someone who suffered immense cruelty in life. Now, in death, she is hyper-vigilant of anyone who ‘dances’ too close.”
  • Strength: The Dayan gains strength to protect herself if people “dance” (assumedly, this means “move”) too close to her.
  • Weakness: She loses strength if people close to her stand still.
  • Evidence: EMF Level 5, Ghost Orb, Spirit Box

2. The Gallu

The Gallu comes from Sumerian and ancient Mesopotamian religion, where they were demons tasked with dragging victims to the underworld.

  • Journal Entry: “Another form of demon, the Gallu is a reminder that death comes for us all. Using protective equipment provokes the ghost until it’s no longer effective”
  • Strength: Using protective equipment (I’m guessing this includes Crucifixes and Smudge Sticks) pushes the ghost to become enraged, weakening equipment effects.
  • Weakness: Being enraged exhausts the Gallu, making protective equipment more effective.
  • Evidence: EMF Level 5, Ultraviolet, Spirit Box

3. The Obambo

The Obambo originates from Central African mythology, representing a restless spirit that has not been properly buried.

  • Journal Entry: “The Obambo is the ghost of someone never properly laid to rest. Fickle and defensive, it flickers between states of calm and aggression.”
  • Strength: While aggressive, the Obambo is quicker to start hunting.
  • Weakness: While calm, the Obambo is slower to start hunting and easier to track.
  • Evidence: Ghost Writing, Ultraviolet, D.O.T.S. Projector

So that’s the information we’ve got so far on the three ghosts, and it’ll likely take the community a couple of days to figure out what those strengths and weaknesses actually mean in terms of gameplay. I mean, the flavor text isn’t giving away too much for some of these ghosts.

There’s a couple of other changes in this update, most notably the Winter’s Jest Christmas event, which brings back Krampus. Another big change is that Banshees now are always female ghosts (so if you get a male ghost model or name, you can cross off the Banshee from the list of ghosts).
