Not every horror game is made equal, and that’s part of the fun.
At JumpScared!, we review games using a clear, five-tier system that helps you quickly understand what’s worth your time (and what’s not). Our scores aren’t about box-ticking or arbitrary numbers – they’re about whether a game works, and who it works for.
Some horror games are built for everyone. Others only speak to a specific kind of fan. And some… well, maybe shouldn’t have been released at all. This page breaks down exactly what each of our scores means, and what kinds of games typically land in each category.
Don’t Play
These are the horror games we can’t in good conscience recommend to anyone. They’re often broken, unfinished, or completely devoid of tension, atmosphere, or fun. Whether it’s due to game-breaking bugs, incoherent design, or a complete failure to deliver on the basics of horror, these games simply aren’t worth your time.
Not Recommended
This is the bucket for games that almost work, but ultimately don’t. There might be an interesting premise or a cool idea buried somewhere, but the execution is too messy or half-baked to make it enjoyable. These games tend to fall flat due to repetitive gameplay, weak scares, or a lack of focus. Hardcore fans might find something to latch onto, but most players will walk away disappointed.
Recommended
These are solid horror games that do a lot right, even if they didn’t fully land for us. Maybe it’s the pacing, maybe it’s the tone, or maybe it’s just a case of being a little rough around the edges. Still, there’s a clear creative vision here, and fans of specific horror subgenres — like multiplayer, retro survival horror, or slow-burn psychological “walking simulators” — will likely get a lot of value.
Just because we had mixed feelings doesn’t mean you will. A Recommended game might not be for everyone, but if it aligns with your personal tastes, there’s a good chance you’ll love it.
Highly Recommended
A standout entry in the genre that fires on almost all cylinders. These games are polished, confidently made, and bring something special to the table, whether it’s atmosphere, storytelling, mechanics, or pure terror. They may not be perfect, but their flaws are minor compared to how much they get right. If you’re a horror fan, this is the kind of game you’ll want to talk about after playing.
Must Play
These are the heavyweights, the genre essentials. A Must Play is a horror game that delivers something unforgettable: perfect pacing, overwhelming tension, or a bold new take that changes the way we think about the genre. Whether it’s through sheer innovation, emotional impact, or iconic scares, these are the games we’ll still be talking about years from now. If you love horror, these are non-negotiable.
How We Decide
We score games based on a mix of atmosphere, mechanics, storytelling, polish, and originality. Every game gets a fair shot, and every score reflects both how well it works and who it’s likely to work for. If we receive a copy of a game from the developers, we do our very best not to let that relationship play a role in the review or scoring.
These reviews reflect the opinions of our writers – nothing more, nothing less. Horror is a deeply personal genre, and we fully respect that everyone has their own tastes. Even a game we rate as Don’t Play might strike a chord with someone else, and that’s absolutely valid. Our goal isn’t to tell you what to think – it’s to offer thoughtful guidance and help you discover horror games that speak to you.
Please feel free to comment on your opinion for a particular game in the comments below a review. We’re sure that your fellow readers will find your take interesting and insightful.
