Supermassive Games is taking on one of horror’s biggest movie franchises with The Conjuring: Unspoken, a new narrative horror game coming exclusively to Netflix on October 13th.

Rather than playing as Ed or Lorraine Warren, you’ll step into the shoes of demonologist Francesca Noakes, investigating a haunted English inn with a few paranormal gadgets at your disposal. And, naturally, the decisions you make along the way can change how the story plays out.

The Conjuring: Unspoken launches on Netflix next week, on October 13. Unlike most Netflix games, however, this one isn’t designed to be played directly on your phone. Instead, it’s a cloud game that runs on your TV or through a web browser, with your phone acting as the controller.

What Is The Conjuring: Unspoken About?

The game takes place at the fictional Red Lion Inn in England, where a grieving family arrives only to discover that something is very, very wrong.

The Cooper family soon finds itself dealing with a series of increasingly disturbing events. Things get considerably worse following a failed séance, with the family becoming trapped in the grip of Vinea, a demon that feeds on grief, and Florrie, a ghost from English folklore.

You play as demonologist Francesca Noakes, and you’ll have several tools at your disposal to investigate the haunting. Your phone can be used as an EMF reader, spirit box and infrared camera, with each tool helping you search the Red Lion Inn for evidence of the supernatural.

The infrared camera even gives you a thermal view of your surroundings, allowing you to search for cold spots that could indicate a paranormal presence.

And, in typical Supermassive Games fashion, your decisions matter. Unspoken is a narrative experience, meaning you’ll make choices throughout the investigation that can shape the story.

Supermassive Games Is Behind It

The biggest reason The Conjuring: Unspoken caught my attention is who’s making it.

Supermassive Games, the studio behind Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology, is developing the game. The studio has built its reputation around cinematic horror experiences where your decisions can determine who lives, who dies and how the story unfolds.

That makes this Netflix collaboration make a lot of sense. Supermassive’s games are basically interactive horror movies already, so The Conjuring feels like a pretty natural fit.

Whether you’re a fan of Supermassive’s games is another question entirely. The studio’s output has been pretty hit-and-miss over the years, but when it gets the formula right, there’s arguably nobody better at making a horror game feel like an interactive movie.

Unfortunately, this partnership announcement comes just one day after more than 70 employees were reported to be laid off from Supermassive Games. The departures include developers, artists, producers, QA and operations staff.

When Does The Conjuring: Unspoken Release?

Netflix hasn’t revealed exactly how long The Conjuring: Unspoken will take to complete, so we’re still waiting to see whether this is a full Supermassive-style horror adventure or something considerably shorter.

For now, though, there’s not much longer to wait. The Conjuring: Unspoken launches on Netflix on October 13.
